First of all, the argument that the war is to control oil is the most unfounded claim out there. The US actually has no need for Iraq's oil. The US produces over 70% of its own oil thanks to Texas and Alaska. The remainder of the oil comes from Saudi Arabia and other various nations, (in fact a major portion of America's oil will soon be supplied by Russia as it is now working with American engineers to tap the wealth of Siberia's oil reserves. None of America's oil comes from Iraq. Iraq's oil has always been sold to other Arab countries and get this, France! Just one of the many economic and political reasons why France wouldn't support the war. The US has no need for Iraqi oil considering Kuwait and Saudi Arabia have greater reserves than Iraq. With the new deal going down with the Oil for Food program the oil will still be sold to the same people! Who knew?

The people certainly are much better off. The images you might see on television of there being problems are images from Bagdad. Yes, the standard of living has gone down there but only because the bulk of resources and energy is no longer being directed only to Bagdad. In the provinces there is electricity available 24 hours a day for the first time in most people's lives. During the Baath Regime the provinces only had electricity for one hour a day. Clean water and food are now easily available to everyone.

For the first time ever the Kurdish people are no longer fearful of being attacked without warning. They are free to voice their opinions and be involved in the Iraqi government for the first time. Now that an interim constitution has been written free elections will be held. The people will have the power to choose their leaders and control their own futures. For once people can also voice their disagreement with the government. Under Sadaam they would have been arrested for it and possibly even killed for it.

The Iraqi people don't "hate" America. They don't like having to have te miltary hanging about but they actually do appreciate what was done. In fact the Baghdad poll which was even endorsed by CNN (the most leftist news agency out there) said that 62% of Baghdad residents say the war was worth losing Sadaam and that things will definately get better. Those numbers would certainly by higher if they checked with the Kurds in the North and the Shihites in the South whom Sadaam persecuted heavily.

If you are going to talk about the US's mistake in selling weapons to Iraq in the 80s then don't forget about the other countries that did it too, Russia, Germany, France, etc. In fact France did one up on the US by actually selling Iraq a nuclear reactor for making weapons grade uranium and plutonium and knowing that was what it was for. Luckily Israel had a damn good airforce to take it out with.

Lets keep this up eh?
