Subject: What Kind of World Is It?

It came to me as I covered the news of the day that the largest employer across the world of men is the military. Thousands of men have no work, can not find work even when they try, except for the military.

I remember as a child the talk about the losses after World War II; the surplus of women, the families in dire need because of the loss of the husband, the single women looking for eligible men. The veterans without limbs, the stories of Veteran's Hospitals full, those no longer able to cope with this world.

Why is it OK for men to be killed in war? Injured, disfigured, loss of limbs and mind, flashbacks, are all OK because it is honorable in the name of war.

What kind of world is it that puts so little value on a human life?

I remember when everywhere I went people smoked. And then, what a change, no smoking in federal buildings, restaurants, hotels, busses, trains, airplanes. We no longer accept even second-hand smoke. Then there are seatbelts, helmets for active sports.

Our world has changed and we have come to accept the change. We make the change so people can live longer and have a better, healthier life.

What kind of world is it that accepts war and the killing of human beings?
