Greetings,
"Sitting on the grass as far as I could see, 650,000 people made the biggest silence I ever heard. As the silence deepened, I thought: This is the sound of bombs and landmines not exploding, of rockets not launched, and machine guns laid aside. It is possible for us all," Joanna Macy wrote in 2002 after participating in a peace meditation organized by Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement in Sri Lanka. On September 21, 2008 we invite you to join us in Ypsilanti, Michigan at the Convocation Center in Eastern Michigan University to experience the "sounds of bombs not exploding" as part of One Peace with thousands of others. It could be the largest peace meditation ever in the United States.
The primary message of this event is that peace begins with each individual and extends to family, community, entire countries and the world around us. To live in harmony, we come together in silence, each in our own way. This is also our way to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Millions of others will join in thought, prayers, actions and vigils around the globe.
Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, founder of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement of Sri Lanka, and a Gandhi Peace Prize awardee will lead the meditation. In a country torn by ethnic strife, Sarvodaya has led more than two million people – Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Muslims and other faith traditions—in similar meditations.
Rev. Michael Bernard Beckwith, a dynamic speaker and founder of the 8,000-member Agape International Spiritual Center in Culver City, California, will also speak at the event.
One Peace is open to public and free of charge. Individuals from all spiritual backgrounds as well as those belonging to no particular faith can participate. It will be a multi-cultural, interfaith, non-political, non-commercial and non-violent event.
We invite you to participate with your family, friends and relatives. If you cannot attend, please contribute as much as you can. You can find details about the event or contribute online at: www.sarvodayausa.org/onepeace
Sincerely, Shisir
