PROCLAMATION

Toronto Day of Non-Violence

October 2, 2009

WHEREAS the World March for Peace and Non-Violence is the concerted effort of more than one million people from over 90 countries around the world who support the eradication of nuclear arms, war and all forms of violence.

The issue of non-violence represents the deepest hopes of all people and remains humanity's guiding inspiration. We all share a belief that if communities respect one another and unite in peace, we can eliminate the violence that has taken hold of our neighbourhoods.

As a member of Mayors for Peace, an international organization of cities dedicated to the promotion of peace throughout the world, I encourage all Torontonians to work together to change attitudes and behaviours that perpetuate violence.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor David Miller, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim October 2, 2009 as "Toronto Day of Non-Violence" and encourage schools, organizations, places of worship and individuals across our city to establish a day of non-violence in our communities.

Mayor David Miller
