August 6th and 9th are the 65th anniversaries of the U.S. atomic bombings of the Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This year's events in remembrance will range in size, but not in significance. In upstate New York, a mother and daughter will light candles at dusk to reflect on their lives and pray for those lost sixty-five years ago. On Seattle's Green Lake, over a thousand people will listen to storytelling and music before floating lanterns out on the water.
Several Peace Action staff and over a hundred youth will remember the two days by engaging in nonviolent direct action outside of Los Alamos nuclear weapons base in solidarity with those peoples affected by radiation and bomb testing around the world. Others including our Political Director, Paul Kawika Martin and NPT Organizer, Judith Le Blanc, will journey to the Japanese cities to organize with other internationals for peace and justice.
Last year, we asked Peace Action members and the greater abolition community to host and register events on our website. We registered over 175 commemorative events proving to our elected officials that there is political support not just for non-proliferation, but for a world free of nuclear weapons within our lifetimes.
On the 65 year anniversary of the attacks, we hope even more people will be moved to host or attend a local event. If you are the host of a commemorative event or action, please register at www.Register.HiroshimaAndNagasaki.org. Otherwise, I hope you will search for, and attend an event in your community.
Sincerely, Kevin M. Martin Executive Director Peace Action
P.S. Please bring a friend or family member to a commemorative event in August.
