Well first of all McCarthy was not all that wrong. He just has a tarnished image thanks to a lot of democrats. The results of the Venona Project which were not released until the mid-90s proved that there were quite a few soviet spies in the American gov't and some held quite high up positions. No one quite knew it though because the democrats and liberal media bashed McCarthy as a platform and if the results were released before the fall of the Soviet Union they would know we knew all about the spies and that we knew how to break their codes.

Dialog and negotiation don't work with people who's ideology is so ingrained in hatred and violence. Unless there is a regime overthrow or a people's revolt leaders tend to understand that their idea works. In the case of Iraq or Afghanistan the leadership had established power through intimidation and suppression. If you make the people incapable of affecting their own change then why do you need to cater to them and stop being violent? If you have an organization like the UN that just issues a whole lot of unenforcable sanctions what motivation will you have to listen to negotiations? Then of course what leader who lives in oppulence gained from violence and oppression will want to step down to impovrishment willingly? Hows that? A thought out answer, I bet you never thought you could hear one from a conservative. Goes to show what democrats know.
