Subject: nuclear nonproliferation treaty, hiroshima, and a peace pilgrimage

as many know, the united nations will hold a review conference of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty in may. this is the ONLY international agreement about nuclear weapons, and it is expected to collapse at the conference.

last week, a group of 25 people began a peace pilgrimage. we have people from all over the world - australia, japan, west africa, the states - who began walking at the gates of the y-12 nuclear weapons plant in oak ridge, tn, to the u.n. headquarters in new york. we're talking to people about nuclear issues during our seven-week walk, and we'll be presenting to the u.n. about the ongoing global violations of the treaty. we are trying to hold the nations of this world accountable to their commitment to disarm these horrible weapons.

on may 1, there will be a massive demonstration in central park in new york. people will gather from all over the globe to speak out against nuclear weapons.

don't forget also that this year marks the sixtieth anniversary of the destruction of hiroshima and nagasaki. groups around the country are organizing through the alliance for nuclear accountability for what promises to be the largest national day of demonstrations against nuclear weapons ever. the date will be saturday, august 6, the date that the 'little boy' bomb was dropped in hiroshima.

for more information about the peace pilgrimage, the demonstrations, or nuclear issues in general, please visit the website for the stop the bombs campaign: www.stopthebombs.org. feel free also to e-mail me, renegadepathos@riseup.net.
