FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2nd ANNUAL PRO-DEMOCRACY EVENT AIMED AT RAISING AWARENESS IN TIMES OF WAR.
The 2nd Annual “Dance for Democracy” will be held at the City Opera House, Saturday, February 11th from 5pm until 11pm. The purpose of the event is to raise political and social awareness in direct response to the Iraq War and to support local activism.
The evening includes an awareness waking ‘trade show’ of local activist groups, keynote speakers Pun Plamondon and Sunsara Taylor and a “Tribal Stomp” dance that will last until 11pm featuring the Ann Arbor based band, NOMO.
The activist ‘trade show’ is meant to display area groups actively working for everything from human rights to animal rights. They mainly focus on peace, justice, and the environment.
Among the participating activist groups are: Veterans For Peace, The Green Party, The Sierra Club,The ACLU, Mideast: Just Peace, NORML, Planned Parenthood, Keep Space For Peace, Third Eye Magazine, The Department of Peace, Earth Day, Fear No Arts Media and many others.
The speakers, Pun Plamondon and Sunsara Taylor, are well known for their peace & justice work. Author/activist, Pun Plamondon, co-founder of the White Panther Party and the Rainbow People’s Party, has been an anti-war activist since the Vietnam War and will address the issue of fascism in the 21st century. Sunsara Taylor is the co-initiator of World Can't Wait - Drive Out the Bush Regime and correspondent for Revolution Magazine. She’s been active in the struggle for reproductive rights, against the war on Iraq and many other social issues.
Following the speakers will be a “Tribal Stomp,” a smoke-free dance featuring the Afro-Beat big band sound of NOMO from Ann Arbor. Inspired by the music of Nigerian saxophonist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, this 10-piece band features percussionist Antoinette Kudoto, female master drummer from Ghana. The seven-piece brass section led by saxophonist, Elliott Bergman is commanding from start to finish. NOMO’s vigor cannot be contained to the confines of the stage. The band frequently spills into the audience; inciting ecstatic cries from sweaty dancers and can send a roomful of stationary indie rock enthusiasts into a percussion induced dance craze. So be prepared to kick off your shoes and shake it, shake it, shake it! Visit http://www.nomomusic.com/ for more info and music samples.

Admission to the fair, rally and dance is $12.00 per person advanced and $15 at the door. Ages 16 and under admitted free accompanied by an adult. Advance tickets available on-line at www.fearnoarts.com

Sponsored by The ACLU, NORML, Fear No Arts Media,
