Notions

Today in Iraq
There is this war that rages on
Built on lies, greed and conspiracy
And I would like to know
What images, if any, comes to mind
When you think about this war
Do you see the devastation that is today's warfare?
500lb bombs raining down death and destruction
This indiscriminate killing
Human carnage and barbarity
Laying innocent lives to waste

When you hear of the victims
What thought comes to your mind?
Little children burnt beyond recognition
Little children with vacant looks in their eyes
Trying to understand this savagery against them
By people claiming to be civilized and God fearing
The untold suffering, hunger, and pain
The fears, apprehensions and desolation
As victims and victors alike
Lose a little bit of their humanity
Trying to stay alive in the annals of war

What about the soldier sent off to war
Told that his orders come before humanity
But cannot find comfort in said orders
After experiencing and contributing
To the inhumanity that is war,
Only to realize
The justice behind the campaign
A necessity to ease the pains of war
Is not there, leaving one to wonder
About the glory and the honor to being a soldier
If one is but an agent of oppression and injustice
A force against our humanity

Looking at war, the carnage that is war
The lives destroyed, so many killed, maimed
Wars of aggression, with no exceptions,
Are nothing but crimes against our humanity,
Leaving one to wonder what evils fill these hearts
Conspiring to wage wars of aggression
What evils dwell in these hearts?
Supporting such causes
What are the fears and insecurities?
Running so deep in the individual, in the society
As to entertain
Notions from leaders seeking legitimacy
For the evils of human torture
How strong are the illusions of self and otherwise
To think such savagery can ever be justified
Or even considered to be right.
